In China they believe that the lovable Minions and their charismatic boss Gru are capable of corrupting society. For this reason, the censors have brought up an old trick from their manual of decency and they changed the ending to Minions: the origin of Gru to be politically correct.
As reported Reuters, the change has not gone unnoticed by the Chinese public. Weibo, the social network par excellence in the Asian giant, has been plagued by comments and screenshots mocking the attitude of the authorities.
At the end of the Chinese version of Minions: the origin of Gru an addition was included explaining that Wild Knuckles, the former leader of the group of villains known as Vicious 6, he was eventually caught and sentenced to 20 years in prison. While for Gru an even more hilarious destiny was chosen: according to the text, he returned to his family and “his greatest achievement was to become the father of three girls”.
A closure clearly different from the one that the film gave its protagonists in the original version, where Gru and Wild Knuckles simply leave together after it is revealed that the latter managed to escape after faking his death.
The change that China has applied to Minions: the origin of Gru It is not surprising, since it is not the first time it happens and most likely it will not be the last. However, this has not prevented the public from expressing its discomfort at the determination of the authorities to “purify” practically all the content that comes from Hollywood.
China gives a politically correct ending to the new Minions movie
One of the main critics of the change of ending established by the censors was the film critic DuSir, who has more than 14 million followers on Weibo. “Only we need special guidance and care, for fear that a cartoon will ‘corrupt’ us,” she said.
As we already mentioned, the case of the latest Minions movie is far from the only one of its kind in China. In fact, at the beginning of this year great controversy was generated in that country due to the change of ending that was applied to Fight club in its premiere on the streaming platform Tencent Video.
At that time, the methodology was similar to the one applied now in Minions: the origin of Gru. The censors cut the final part of the film and inserted a script indicating that the police had discovered Tyler Durden’s plans and arrested his collaborators. Finally, they commented that, due to his actions, the protagonist had been sent to an asylum.
What was striking was that the Chinese ending of Fight club it was more faithful to that of Chuck Palahniuk’s novel than that of David Fincher’s film. After the controversy, it was reversed and the original closure was restored; which gives some hope that China check this nonsense and do the same with the new Minions feature film.
