Without a doubt, by now, you already know the big differences that exist between HDDs and SSDs. Although mechanical hard drives are in free fall in sales, they are still vital for mass data storage. The reason is that they offer large capacities (up to 20 TB) at affordable prices.
SSDs have a big problem in this regard. It is difficult to find drives larger than 4TB and the few 8TB drives are worth almost the same as an 18TB HDD. A capacity problem that none of the manufacturers has managed to solve.
Having a 2 TB SSD has never been so cheap
It is incredible how in a few months the price of these storage units has fallen so much. The price drop is due to a drastic reduction in demand and a glut of memory chips. Two factors that have forced us to sell at cost and even at a loss.
Thanks to this situation we can find units like this Crucial BX500 2 TB for 88 euros (-13%). For example, in January of this year these units were around 150 euros and now they are almost half the price. Come on, the fall is brutal.
This Crucial unit is characterized by having Micron 3D NAND Flash memories. We are talking about one of the main memory manufacturers on the market that offers its own solutions. And Crucial is its commercial storage units division.
Regarding performance, this unit is based on the SATA 3 interface, so performance is very limited. This unit offers us a 540MB/s read speed and of writing of up to 500 MB/s. We say that they are between x6-x8 times more than an HDD.
As an alternative we have the Silicon Power A55 2 TB unit for 75 euros. This unit is not on sale, but the price it has is really impressive and the best possible. I would say that, despite the fact that Silicon Power is a fairly unknown brand, I have been lucky enough to use these units and I think they are great.
The truth is that the performance is not the best, since this unit offers a reading speed from up to 500MB/s and of writing from up to 450MB/s. It’s a pretty slow drive, even for the SATA interface, but for storing data and accessing it quickly, it’s fine.
There are many options and very good prices
It is true that there is not a brutal amount of offer, but all the units are below 100 euros. One of the most interesting options is this Samsung 87 QVO 2 TB unit for 97 euros (-10%). As you well know, this South Korean company is one of the main manufacturers of NAND Flash memories and also makes its own controllers.
We are talking about, possibly, the best unit on the market in this format. It offers us a reading speed from up to 560MB/s and of writing from up to 530MB/s, maximizing the capabilities of the SATA interface. Additionally, it supports up to 2,880 TBWwhich is much more than the written terabyte capacity that most of these drives support.
Similar in features is the Crucial MX500 2 TB unit that costs 97 euros (-53%). We once again have a unit developed by Micron that is sold on the market under its gaming brand. So we could say that it is Samsung’s main competitor.
The benefits are similar, offering a reading speed from up to 560MB/s and a speed of writing from up to 510MB/s. As we see, the writing is a little inferior, although it is above what is usually usual. Perhaps where it weakest is in resistance and it offers us “only” 700 TBW, much less than the previous unit.
