Sony could decide to end its Xperia line to create a new range of smartphones, during a major design change.
Sony may well be a tech and video game giant, but its smartphone division has struggled to establish itself in recent years. And this despite technological innovations such as the 4K screen, a smartphone with a real optical zoom (Xperia 1 IV) and still the first smartphone with a one-inch type sensor (Xperia Pro-I). The brand does not convince, as stated Phone Arenain 2022, estimates the manufacturer's market share at only 0.35% worldwide, just ahead of Asus and behind HMD (Nokia).
According to the media Notebookcheck, which cites various sources on Weibo, the Xperia brand could have had its day. By this I mean that if Sony still seems determined to produce smartphones, it could be done under another name tomorrow, a bit like when Xiaomi abandoned the Mi in the name of its products in 2021.
A final innovation for the road
It must be said that the Xperia brand has been dragging its heels for almost 15 years. Created in 2008, it ended up becoming the one and only phone range from the Japanese giant.
Sony could end it around 2025, taking advantage of the launch of new under-screen camera technology. A particularly interesting point since the Xperias are notably known for their slightly dated designs, with a wide border at the top of the screen to accommodate the selfie camera, at a time when everyone, even Apple, has gone to the punch.
The move to under-screen camera technology could therefore involve a profound change in the design of Sony smartphones. What better time to refresh its image and range than to align with this. Be careful though, this is speculation on the part of Notebookcheck, although informed. Let's add that 2025 seems a long way off, and Sony has plenty of time to readjust its plans between now and then. If Sony does indeed decide to follow this plan, the latest Sony Xperia could be the Xperia 1 VI or Xperia 1 VII.
