Tesla knows that not everyone can afford to spend more than 40,000 euros on an electric vehicle, which is why the company tries to make sacrifices to offer less expensive models. According to a recent Electrek report, Elon Musk’s company plans to soon release a cheaper Tesla Model Y with a more efficient battery!
How low is Tesla willing to go?
Today, the Tesla Model Y is offered at a price of €62,990 for the long-range version and €66,990 for the performance version. If these two prices are particularly high, they could soon be accompanied by a third option which should be marketed at less than 60,000 euros.
According to our colleagues, this new Model Y uses batteries with 4680 cells. This would be the “Standard Range AWD” version which would offer a range of 450 km and acceleration from 0 to 100 in less than five seconds for 59,990€. But this version is currently only offered to employees. A version intended for the general public will be available in the coming weeks.
This Model Y also includes a few features not seen on any previous trim level, such as a magnetic center armrest and storage shelf. Tesla reportedly delivered a handful of these EVs to employees at its “Giga Rodeo” event in Texas last week.
The batteries with 4680 cells are twice as large as Tesla’s existing units, but they have five times the capacity. This allows Tesla to either increase the range of its vehicles or use fewer batteries to maintain the same range, which could reduce costs. In the new version of the Model Y, they are integrated into a structural battery pack which should reduce complexity and weight, further improving efficiency.
As such, this Model Y isn’t so much a line extension as it is a milestone in Tesla’s product strategy. Although it will be some time before the new battery technology reaches all of the manufacturer’s electric vehicles, it should help contain prices, improve range and, eventually, lead to the famous car at 25,000 euros.
