Shortly after Elon Musk bought Twitter, the billionaire instructed developers to release several updates to the iOS, Android, and other apps (including one that changed the name). However, one app never received an update after the acquisition, “Twitter for Mac,” the app was abandoned under the previous management and continued to be abandoned under Elon Musk’s takeover. Today, the app has completely disappeared from the Mac App Store…
Twitter for Mac is no longer available
For more than 24 hours, the official Twitter app for Mac has been unavailable on the Mac App Store, leaving Mac users without the option to install or update the app. This removal has been made without any official explanation to date, but it is very likely that the decision comes from the new management led by Elon Musk.
Indeed, the removal of this application could be linked to several factors. First of all, the application was no longer intended to receive updates and it still kept the old name “Twitter”, while the social network recently changed its name to “X”.
For users who have already installed the application, it is still possible to use it. They keep all the current features as well as the old Twitter logo, emblematic of the social network before its name change.
Twitter for Mac had high ambitions and received a large number of updates over time. However, its development was gradually abandoned, largely due to the lack of success with users. One of the main reasons for this failure was the preference of Mac users for the web version of Twitter, accessible via browsers.
Despite its deprecation, the current version of Twitter for Mac remains modern enough to remain functional for several years (for those who have downloaded it). However, users should be aware that remote deactivation is still possible. Such deactivation could prevent access to new posts and profiles, rendering the application completely useless.
The disappearance of the Twitter app for Mac from the Mac App Store marks the end of an era for Mac users. It was the last app with the old name and logo, there’s a bit of nostalgia to it.
