The creators of Cyberpunk 2077 are holding an in-depth presentation of the RT Overdrive at the Game Developers Conference. Announced a few months ago, this new mode should further improve the quality of lighting and reflections on the title.
Known for its graphic quality and its exceptional greediness in resources, Cyberpunk 2077 quickly became a true technical showcase for Nvidia. On the occasion of the Game Developers Conference (not to be confused with the GTC, organized during the same period), Pawel Kozlowski (Senior Developer Technology Engineer for Nvidia) and Jakub Knapik (artistic director of CD Projekt Red) will hold a session on March 22 entitled ” Bring Path Tracing to Night City “.
This conference should allow Nvidia and the Polish studio to engage in ” a comprehensive overview of the benefits of current Ray Tracing algorithms, and how the new Path Tracing approach changes the way we think about Next Gen rendering used in AAA open-world games “, we read in a press release. In other words, the RT Overdrive mode announced at the end of 2022 on the game should be presented there in depth.
Always more Ray Tracing in Cyberpunk 2077
” Cyberpunk 2077 is technically one of the most demanding games out there due to the breadth of its universe and visual variety. Night City’s neon-lit environments and expansive vistas are already pushing the boundaries of what’s currently possible in real time. RT Mode: Overdrive aims to take it to the next level by incorporating RTX Path Tracing Mode into this set “, explains CD Projekt.

” Path Tracing helps minimize the strain on creators by providing pixel-perfect, soft shadows and indirect light delivery in fully dynamic environments from all light sources – whether an analytical local light, an emissive surface, a skylight, etc. “, continues the studio.
As a reminder, if the Path Tracing is a major novelty for Cyberpunk 2077 on the graphic level, it is not a novelty strictly speaking at Nvidia. This technology had indeed already been exploited a few months ago with Portal RTX and Quake RTX… two vintage titles which had taken advantage of Path Tracing to take a serious facelift. Arriving on Cyberpunk, however, this technology should show what it is capable of better, this time on a recent title.
