The solutions that researchers bring to the table to address natural disasters caused by climate change.
Climate change is a fact, not only are temperatures getting higher, but they are natural disasters more regularly, especially floods or forest fires.
And now, a new estimate reveals that roughly 1 billion people could die this century because of various natural disasters caused by global warming, most people in the southern hemisphere.
Researchers from Canada and Austria came to this conclusion after analyzing 180 studies on the climate change and mortality.
From this analysis, they converged on the 1,000-ton rule, that is, for every 1,000 tons of fossil fuel burned, one person would die.
So calculating this rule of thumb, they concluded that around 1 billion people could die if the planet warms by 2°C or more by 2100.
“If you take the scientific consensus on the 1,000 tonne rule seriously and do the numbers, anthropogenic global warming (AGW) equates to 1 billion premature corpses over the next century,” said the Western University researcher. joshua pearce. “Obviously, we have to act. And we have to act fast.”
People could die from a combination of disasters: “Storms and floods kill directly, but also indirectly, causing epidemics. Droughts kill when drinking water or food runs out. Sea level rise kills when people are forced to leave their land and become migrants. In all of these cases, poverty and AGW combine to cause human deaths.”
The scientists point out that energy policy must be addressed directly and aggressively to curb carbon emissions: “To save millions of lives it is ethically, morally and logically acceptable to radically accelerate existing trends in energy efficiency, electrification and the use of renewable energy , with the aim of powering the global society without any fossil fuel”, they conclude.
