It will take quite a bit of power to run Apple’s AI and not all iPhones, iPads and Macs will be compatible
The artificial intelligence is one of the most interesting technologies that have appeared in recent years, capable of covering a large number of tasks. We know that in iOS 18 we will have many new features related to AI, which will also reach other operating systems. However, it is likely that not all iPhones, iPads and Macs can fully access Apple’s AI.
As has been revealed, only the most powerful iPhones, iPads and Macs will be fully compatible with Apple’s artificial intelligence. So not all iPhones that update to iOS 18 will be able to use all the AI functions that Apple has prepared.
Apple artificial intelligence
It is expected that Apple launches numerous new features related to artificial intelligence at its WWDC24. AI will be integrated into all upcoming operating systems and it is expected that we will have many important new features on the iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Apple wants you most of the innovations related to AI run on the devices themselves without the need for them to connect to the internet. Although it is true that there will be functions that require Apple servers, the vast majority will work without an internet connection.
However, this has a big drawback. Only the More modern and powerful devices, with a chip with a next-generation Neural Engine, will be able to execute the most complex AI tasks. So not all devices that can update iOS 18, iPadOS 18 or macOS 15 will be able to access these artificial intelligence functions.
It’s not to say that less powerful devices won’t have AI capabilities, but more advanced capabilities will require powerful devices. For example, all the devices they can update are likely to feature the new AI-enhanced Siri, which will likely require an internet connection to work.
iPhone, iPad and Mac fully compatible with Apple AI
- iPhone with A17 Pro chip or later: iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and the future iPhone 16.
- iPad with M1 chip or later: iPad Air M1, iPad Air M2, iPad Pro M1, iPad Pro M2 and iPad Pro M4.
- Mac with M1 chip or later.
Apple is betting that the new AI features for the iPhone will encourage users to upgrade their devices. Many of the on-device AI capabilities will require an iPhone 15 Pro or later to work. Macs and iPads, meanwhile, will need at least an M1 chip. https://t.co/iSDTs6Xahi

It must be taken into account that, for example, the A17 Pro chip features significantly faster CPU and GPU cores and a new 16-core Neural Engine capable of performing 35 billion operations per second. Something that may be essential for these artificial intelligence functions.
At least As for iPads and Macs, it seems that the requirement will be the M1, as reported by Mark Gurman. This means that there will be many devices capable of using the new artificial intelligence functions that Apple presents. The M1 chip was introduced in 2020 and since then Apple has launched multiple Macs and iPads with this processor and its successors.
