The last guest at the always-on screen party has been Apple with its iPhone 14 Pro, which has been the last to implement this function within its phones and which many users have complained about, due to the battery that is capable of consume, but the question is clear. Does this mode really consume so much battery or are they just rumors?
Always On to the test!
DXOMARK has worked hard to carry out a study in which it tests four of the most interesting mobiles that we can find on the market and that currently have this Always On function, which are iPhone 14 Pro Max, Google Pixel 7 Pro, Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and Xiaomi 12S Ultra.
All of them have been in the same configuration and screen conditions because they were in the same room, with the same wallpaper, the same light, battery level and later the configuration was also similar.
Roughly speaking, it has obviously been found that this function wears out the battery of our mobile a lot. Being specific, in many cases download four times faster than it would without that feature active. An example is that of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, which with this configuration lasts 103 hours with the screen on. and 495 with the removal of the Always On feature. Of course there are cases in which this difference is less accentuated, such as the Pixel 7 Pro, which with Always On on lasts 139 and off, 367. The other two models stay somewhere in between.
The performance of these battery cells has also been analyzed and despite the fact that they perform on par with each other, the best optimized battery is that of the iPhone. Despite this optimization, it has become clear that this is a function that download quickly and efficiently our mobile phone in standby conditions, so turning it off is a great example of what to do to save battery.
Other factors that affect
Within this performance that our mobile performs with respect to the way in which the Always On mode behaves with it, there are also certain factors that we must take into account and that of course, they will see how each of them works . and in this case the measurements of the screen and the way to turn on the same in ODA, is an important factor. For example, the iPhone 14 Pro Max and the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, were two of the phones that had the brightest screen, with it always on and by a lot of difference. Similarly, it should be noted that in the case of the Apple phone, it turns on the whole screen when this mode is operational, which the rest do not, although Xiaomi shows a very bright indicator.
The screen technology is also an issue that affects this performance of the Always On function, which has already shown that it uses up a lot of battery in our mobile phone. What we do have to be clear about is that if there is a mobile that has proven to be optimized for this function and prepared to use it in the best way, that’s the iPhone 14 Pro Maxwhich despite spending a lot of battery, is going to offer a slightly better experience than most Android phones.
