A modder managed to combine the best of the Steam Deck and the Nintendo Joy-Con in a single device, resulting in a functional handheld console, but with an unattractive design.
Mods have been around for several decades, originating from the PC gaming community. Some are dedicated to creating and sharing mods in order to personalize and enhance the gaming experience, while others see it as a hobby to showcase their skill in developing unique and unimaginable gadgets.
Mods have become extremely popular and have spread to other platforms over time, like handheld consoles for example.
When the Steam Deck, one of the most popular handheld consoles in the industry, was announced, it wasn’t long before comparisons to the Nintendo Switch began. Both devices offered the ability to play quality games.
However, it is well known that both consoles are aimed at very different segments, but one user, a lover of mods, could not help but combine the best of both devices in one.
The mod that combines the Steam Deck and the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con
A modder who calls himself mrblackm123shared on Reddit his project of combining the best of the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck in a single device, where the result is usually “scary” in terms of design, but functional to a certain extent.
The goal was to combine the versatility and form factor of Nintendo’s console with the performance of Valve’s handheld console. In the end, it was obtained unique Steam Deck mod that has blown the minds of gamers and all mod fans.
According to the user, the process was done using a third-party plastic casing as a base. Subsequently, disassembled the internal components of the Steam Deck and moved them into the new case.
The most significant challenge, however, was making Joy-Con controllers compatible with the modded console. To achieve this, he used rails on the sides of the case to allow the controllers to slide into place as they would on a Nintendo Switch.
It also added a fan on the back of the case to ensure optimal performance and keep components cool without fear of overheating.. It even has a small internal speaker capable of playing sounds and music.
The end result is a modified Steam Deck compatible with Nintendo Joy-Con where none of the devices lose their features or functionality. Users can enjoy all Steam games and run them smoothly on this portable console.
The modder baptized his console under the name “Steamjoy”in which he shows us testimony of the ingenuity and passion of the community of modding of games. It is possible to combine the best of two portable consoles into one, even if the design results are terrifying.
