Neighborhoods are the center of daily life for many people. There is their home, their friends, the stores where they shop… In short, their people.
Each one sees their neighborhood, or that of others, in a different way, even contrary to reality. All this is intended to reflect Hoodmaps, a world map of neighborhoods where they are shown labels with the opinions that its own inhabitants have of it. But also, with those of those who do not live there.
This, unsurprisingly, has created a conflict, because those who live in one place tend to hold their neighborhood in high regard, and do not like others to describe it very differently.
Thus, for example, it occurred to us to look for the neighborhoods of Seville, and we see that some areas are marked with skulls, indicating danger. In the Barriada de León it says “They think they are rich”, and in the Parque Alcosa, “It’s not Seville”.
There are also labels that are intended to be informative. Areas marked as nice walk, skate area, etc.
hoodmaps is a map created with Mapbox, a tool that allows you to create your own layers on the open maps of Open Street Map. This can also be done with Google Maps. For example the map of the Hispanic Legacy that we saw a few days ago.
In HoodMaps you can search for any location in the worldbut there are only the most important ones, and you must write its name in English, if it exists. For example Seville is Seville. Others like Madrid or Barcelona, do not change.
it’s possible apply filters to better view the data. You can activate a pixel mode, and mark places such as sports areas, cafes, gas stations, etc.
You also have the option of paint areas of the map according to the type of neighborhood: rich, business area, hipster, tourist, student, and housing.
If you want to give your opinion on any of them, simply click on a place on the map and touch the T-shaped icon. Tags can be upvoted or downvotedand those with more positives, will be the visible ones.
It’s a relatively new map, so some locations have few labels. But considering that anyone can write what they want and paint the neighborhood-type colors as they please, something tells us that it will soon turn into chaos…
