Crash tests in the US are getting tougher. How does this affect the market for cheap cars? Here are the keys.
Security tests in the field of mobility have been changing to adapt to new technologies on the market. a car rated 5 stars EuroNCAP in 2005, possibly would get 1 or 2 stars today. The qualification requirements have been tightened with the aim of making driving safer. After all, traffic accidents continue to dominate the first places of avoidable deaths. What is coming next?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in America will focus primarily on side impact testing. After all, it is believed to be responsible for a quarter of the accidents culminating in the death of one of the occupants. Therefore, the weights used will be increased and, of course, the impact speed will also be increased. The goal is to get manufacturers to increase the protection of cars in these sensitive spaces.
Let us see, therefore, what will happen next in the market, what these requirements imply in those vehicles with a cheaper price and, of course, to what extent it will be possible to increase safety in a series of very specific parts. Here are the keys that will have to be taken into account in the future in an industry that, without a doubt, is not experiencing its best years.
More requirements to be able to homologate future cars in terms of safety
According to the specialized portal Slash Gear, we are facing a particularly delicate moment. The new side impact tests will incorporate weights of 1,900 kilograms. This is so because current cars still have a greater weight due to the increase in technological endowment that is possessed. In addition, it should be noted that electric cars weigh much more than the equivalent of internal combustion. To date, the tests had been carried out with a weight of 1,500 kilograms.
On the other hand, the impact speed will also be increased in order to adapt to the new market standards. Previously, the test was carried out at a speed of 50 km/h, which allowed checking how was the hardness of the blow. Now, however, the vehicle speed will be raised to 60 km/h. This will allow knowing with a higher level of reliability a hypothetical situation that we could find in reality. After all, if the limit is 50 km/h, who does not drive, on occasion, at 60 km/h?
Well, what are the models affected by this increase in requirements? The Toyota Camry, the Nissan Altima and the Chevrolet Malibu have not obtained a great score in these new tests, a fact that serves to determine a slightly lower valuation than they would have been under previous conditions. The objective is for brands to incorporate internal structures through bars or plates that ensure the integrity of vehicle occupants.

It is expected that over the coming months there will also be a tightening of the necessary requirements to pass the homologation tests present in other areas of influence, such as the European market. All this also occurs at a time of particular difficulty for manufacturers, since the shortage of components in the sector and inflation are becoming headaches that are difficult for them to assume.
