Google Maps is one of the most interesting mapping tools on the market. Among them, we have found, for example, one that shows you if an epic battle has taken place in the vicinity of your home throughout history. Now, the company Atlantic Geomatics is carrying out a study to collect information on cemeteries throughout the United Kingdom. The objective is to be able to establish a guide to know in which spaces of this class are the remains of our ancestors.

Let’s see, therefore, what the work that is being carried out by this company is based on, How is the information gathering being carried out? and, of course, to what extent we are facing a differential service in regard to a product with such characteristics. What other functions could this curious and incredible service have? Here are some of the key differentials, according to information from Wired.

The Google Maps of the cemeteries will be a reality very soon

With the help of surveyors, an ongoing analysis is being carried out to determine the exact location of a given grave. In the United Kingdom, thanks to this system, it will be possible preserve valuable information about dead bodies that remain in the subsoil after decades and decades. In some cases, this may be the result of not knowing the exact location, so the work being carried out by Atlantic Geomatics can help and have a great future in the coming years. The objective is, therefore, to create a kind of Google Maps of cemeteries, being able to use, at the same time, a function similar to that of Street View. In this way, it will be possible to visit a certain grave from home and, why not, know the exact location to go in person.

The work of obtaining information has already begun. Since November 2021, staff from this company have been kicking the UK cemeteries with Leica Pegasus backpacks behind their backs. Thanks to this technology, it is possible to obtain relief information on tombstones, niches and, simply, existing paths within a particular cemetery. All this is subsequently analyzed in order to create a database.

At press time, A total of 300 cemeteries have already been analyzed. It should be noted that each of the jobs requires a team specialized in each subject, since, on multiple occasions, several visits must be made to obtain more precise information on locations. It is hard work that, thanks to the existence of an open code, the parishes themselves can have access to incorporate data on new guests in these spaces. It is expected that, in a few decades, this work will be of vital importance.
