We have news about the digital canon. It is something that has been going on since 2003 and has gone through various phases, disappearing for a period and returning as part of the General State Budget years later.
It is an important update of the digital canon in force since 2017 that marks a price increase on some products, as well as a fee for devices that were not covered in the previous document. But hey, let’s stop with introductions and Let’s see how the new digital canon of 2023 looks.
The price of hard drives and SSDs goes down, the price of mobile phones and smart watches go up
In the BOE we find a detailed table in which we can see both the new fee and the rate distribution percentage. It is curious to see that they have been very picky, including devices with Huawei’s HarmonyOS system.
As it is a fairly extensive table, we have summarized it a bit with the main items that are usually purchased, as well as a comparison between the current rate and what we will pay once the new digital canon comes into force. We leave it below:

The table has its crumb. On the one hand, and most striking, is that the tax practically triples if we look at mobile phones best sellers, smartphones. There is another category, non-smart cell phones with MP3. They are basic models that continue to be sold, but have been relegated to a very minority use.
In tablets we do not see such a large increase as in smartphones, something logical taking into account that mainly multimedia nature of the tablets that the previous canon already included. But the big news is smart watches, which debut on the list with a fee of two and a half euros. Taking into account the limited multimedia consumption of these devices, it is curious.
There are devices in which the canon has not been touched or lowered. In this last bag are both internal and external storage systems. Now, how is this canon distributed? Here, the Law establishes three categories: books and similar, video and audio.
In the case of a mobile phone, this percentage is divided into 10% for the books category, 49% for audio and 41% for video. In the case of a smartwatch it is exactly the same canon. And in a tablet, for example, it is divided into 22.5%, 37% and 40.5%, respectively.
We will see what happens after July 1 with the price of some devices and how the digital fee affects the Spanish market.
