Uber: How to validate your trip using a PIN code for greater security?

It is no secret to anyone that in countries like Mexico, security during transfers is a concern of almost everyone. The levels of insecurity are high and the search for guarantees to carry out a trip with the greatest possible safety is constant. Uber knows it.

In this game, mobility apps were presented as a great alternative. However, the scope of crime has led these firms to optimize their security functions to deal with a scenario that is far from their control.

Uber reveals for the first time the ratings that users receive

That is why, for some years, the releases and security updates of services such as Uber have become more and more frequent, a firm that has just announced an improvement in its service in this regard.

Available in Mexico from now on, Uber launched the “Safety Check” tool, which makes it easier for users to access protection features to make sure they keep them active before each trip.

According to the company, the launch of this function responds to the detection of a lack of knowledge of these tools by users:

“Our analytics show us that using the Uber app has become so routine, and seamless, that we don’t fully explore existing security features. With the Security Check, we seek to motivate users to complete their security profile in the app, in favor of greater peace of mind in their transfers,” said Cecilia Román, Uber’s security communication manager in Mexico.

Uber and a valuable PIN code

In this way, the Security Check tool will be located in the horizontal bar of the app, where clicking on it will direct the user to three functions that it is recommended to configure before starting a trip: Trusted contacts (to choose 5 contacts that have access to route location data and vehicle and driver data), RideCheck (which detects route anomalies during the trip by sending notifications to the user) and PIN code verification.

The latter is perhaps one of the most interesting since it allows both users and the driver to be certain of the identity of both parties.

How does it work?

Thanks to this Uber feature, when requesting a trip, users will receive a randomly generated four-digit code which must be provided to the driver as soon as the vehicle arrives at the boarding point.

The interesting thing is that the trip cannot be started in the app if the PIN is not delivered or if it is incorrect. Users receive a confirmation notification when the process is successfully completed to begin the journey.

This provides security to both parties as it is a method of verifying the identity of the parties involved.

  • The process to activate it is simple:
  • Enter the Uber app and click on your profile picture
  • Select the “Security Check” option
  • Choose the PIN code verification option
  • Here a new page will open where you must enable the “use a PIN code to verify trips” box where you can also decide if this option will remain in function for all trips or only for those that are made from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. night to 6 in the morning.
