In recent months, the manufacturer ASUS has been launching different models that fall within the upper-middle range of routers with Wi-Fi 6. After all, they are routers that are worth less than 200 euros, so they are quite affordable compared to the top-of-the-range models that exceed €500 in many cases.
This model is of a medium-high range, so we cannot expect it to incorporate high-end features such as Multigigabit ports or a very powerful processor. It is something that we must take into account, but it is perfectly valid for the vast majority of people who need a new router to replace the one of the operator. The price of this model is around €180 approximately.
This new router is Simultaneous dual band with Wi-Fi 6 and AX5400 class. In the 2.4GHz band we can get one speed up to 574Mbpsthanks to its two external antennas in MU-MIMO 2T2R configuration, the 40MHz channel width and the Wi-Fi 6 standard. 5GHz band we can get one speed up to 4804Mbpsthanks to its four external antennas in MU-MIMO 4T4R configuration, to the 160MHz channel width that it supports in this frequency band, and also to the Wi-Fi 6 standard that it incorporates.
This model has all the features of Wi-Fi 6 such as the OFDMA, MU-MIMO and BeamformingIn addition, it also includes a physical WPS button to easily synchronize WiFi clients without the need to enter passwords. Finally, in terms of wireless security, this model has support for WPA2-PSK/Enterprise and also supports WPA3-SAE/Enterprise, so we have the latest security protocol at our disposal to guarantee the best possible connection.
This router is extensible, therefore it is ASUS AiMesh compatible to form a complete high-performance mesh WiFi network. We have at our disposal both WiFi roaming between nodes with the 802.11k/v standards and we also have band-steering, in addition, we can configure this last functionality in a very detailed way through the Asuswrt firmware that it incorporates.
Wired and USB
The ASUS RT-AX5400 has one Gigabit Ethernet port for the Internet WAN, the firmware supports configuring VLANs in the WAN, VLANs per port to provide IPTV services and also supports Movistar Triple VLAN FTTH profile. Thanks to Asuswrt, we will have compatibility with any operator, also, if you use Movistar with Movistar Plus+ you can replace the Movistar router and place this equipment (you will need to buy an ONT, of course).
Regarding the local network, we have a total of four Gigabit Ethernet ports for the LAN. The firmware allows us to configure Jumbo Frames at 9K on the router, with the aim of maximizing the transfer of files through the local network. We can also configure Link Aggregation or link aggregation, ideal for providing up to 2Gbps bandwidth to NAS servers or PCs with dual network cards.
Asuswrt 388 Firmware
This router comes by default with the Asuswrt firmware in its version 388, this means that we have at our disposal the latest improvements that ASUS has incorporated into its firmware regarding privacy when browsing, incorporating DNS over TLS, as well as the service from WireGuard VPN. In the latter case, we can use WireGuard for both the VPN server and the VPN client through Fusion VPN. If you need to connect to a remote VPN server with certain wired or WiFi clients on your local network, you can configure it directly on the router so that they can forward all network traffic through that server.
The rest of the features such as WiFi networks for guests, AiProtection Pro, compatibility with Amazon Alexa and IFTTT, as well as access to advanced configuration options related to WiFi, LAN, WAN and much more, are also present in this device as usual. be habitual.
Now that you know the main features of the ASUS RT-AX5400, we are going to show you a complete video.
Unboxing and first impressions
In RedesZone we already have this new router with us ASUS RT-AX5400, a team that is similar to others that we have previously analyzed such as the ASUS TUF-AX5400. Physically we have a very similar design to them, although in this case we do not have Aura RGB with LEDs that allow us to configure them, the design is much more basic, which is not a bad thing because many people do not like the “aggressive” designs of gaming routers.
As you can see, the price of this model of less than €200 is quite interesting if you want to have a very good WiFi network. If you want to know everything that comes in the box of this router, and what the new model is like, then you can see all the details:
Soon in RedesZone we are going to offer you a complete analysis where you will see in detail the real performance that it is capable of providing us.
