The photo will be a highlight of the iPhone 15 presentation next Tuesday. Like every year, you could say, but for the 2023 vintage the changes should be significant, in every sense of the word.
Of course, Apple will undoubtedly mention the Dynamic Island and USB-C on all iPhone 15s, or even the A17 chip and the titanium of the iPhone 15 Pro chassis, without forgetting of course the action button on these same models. But we can safely bet that the manufacturer will put the package on the photographic capacities of its new smartphones.
everybody wins
MacRumors claims to have obtained the data sheet of the various photo systems of the iPhone 15 – the site speaks of pre-production information, so the specifications may have evolved since. Nevertheless, it gives a good idea of what awaits us on September 12!
For the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, Apple would therefore have set its sights on a 48 mpx wide-angle photo sensor (ƒ / 1.6 aperture), with the addition of an ultra wide-angle of 12 mpx (ƒ2.4). This last sensor does not change from one year to the next, however the new main sensor will tip the range into a new world!
The iPhone 14 indeed incorporates a 12 mpx model which certainly does its job well, but the new sensor will offer new smartphones the possibility of taking pictures with greater definition and more detail. On the other hand, they may not be entitled to the Sony IMX-803 sensor present on the iPhone 14 Pro, but to a different version with improved capabilities.
The periscope arrives on the iPhone 15 Pro Max
The iPhone 15 Pro would have a trio on the back consisting of a 48 mpx wide angle (ƒ / 1.78) – the same Sony model as on the 14 Pro -, a 12.7 mpx (ƒ / 2.8) telephoto lens as well as a an ultra wide-angle of 13.4 mpx (ƒ / 2.2). These last two sensors are really new: on the iPhone 14 Pro, they are satisfied with 12 mpx.
It is the iPhone 15 Pro Max which will be entitled to the big annual change. Admittedly, the configuration will be similar to that of the iPhone 15 Pro for short, but the telephoto lens will be periscopic. We should therefore benefit from an optical zoom of between x5 and x10, against a maximum of x3 on the 14 Pro. This sensor placed perpendicularly needed to make room inside the smartphone, which is why it is limited to the largest of the iPhone 15.
Nevertheless, it could appear on the iPhone 16 Pro (and the Pro Max, of course), the 2024 range which for the occasion would enlarge its screen diagonals: 6.3 and 6.9 inches, against 6, 1 and 6.7 inches. But that will be another story…
