Did he get free thanks to the information he provided to the DEA? It was even joked on the internet that the character was still waiting for Hank and Steven at the safe house.
As well, Better Call Saul solved the question completely. In the scene where Francesca is on the phone with Saúl, he asks her what happened to Huell. Her former assistant replies: “I guess he went back to New Orleans. The DEA busted him for falsehood or something. Last I heard, he left.”
