ChatGPT is on everyone’s lips for its incredible capabilities, and now that GPT-4 has been released, everyone is excited about this new technology. But, Have you ever wondered what the initials that make up the names of these models mean? A fairly elementary question, but one that is essential to know what we are talking about when we touch on topics about this artificial intelligence.

The beginnings of the GPT model can be traced back to the year 2018. It was at that time that OpenAI, a company founded by Elon Musk and Sam Altman, released the first version of its model. Your name means Generative Pre-Trained Transformer —Pretrained Generative Transformer—, and as you may have already tested for yourself with Bing Chat or ChatGPT, it has been trained with the basic task of speaking like a human being.

And what do the terms mean? Generative Pre-Trained Transformer? This type of artificial intelligence models, in general, are trained on large amounts of text, earning it the nickname of pretrained. They are built using architecture blocks transformera type of neural network that learns context, so it can deliver sequential data based on relationships.

The architecture transformer it is essential for technologies like GPT or ChatGPT due to its ability to pay attention to itself. These types of models are used in translation, text prediction, summarization and even in fields such as trading either forecasting.

What does the number next to the abbreviation GPT mean? Well, this will refer to the version of the model we are talking about. The higher the number, the newer it will be. Thus, we have that GPT-2 is inferior in capabilities to GPT-3, and the latter will be inferior to the new GPT-4.

What does the term mean? chat in ChatGPT

Now that we’ve broken down ChatGPT’s last name, it’s time to understand what the term means. chat that bears the name of the most popular platform of the moment. OpenAI has chosen it deliberately, and reveals the most famous function of the well-known chatbot: talking.

To what was explained above is added the ability to hold conversations. ChatGPT means that the model can answer user questions using natural and conversational language. All this, of course, through the pretrained generative transformative model. The result is almost as if you were having a text conversation with another person in the world.

Of course, unlike a person, ChatGPT is not aware of what you are saying and does not understand the context of the text either. He simply uses a system of probabilities, patterns, and relationships collected during his pre-training to put together a sentence in the most natural way possible.
