Apple is not stopping. While Netflix takes the hammer of cancellations for a walk, with the unexpected conclusion of excellent productions such as ‘The man against the bee’, Apple TV + premieres this Friday, May 12, the first three episodes of ‘City on Fire’. And there is the clue, in three and not two. The platform is used to presenting the pilot and a second supplementary episode, not the first three at once. This time it is like that for a simple reason: this series is so addictive that from Cupertino they have had to understand what better to share.
Not surprisingly, behind the controls are Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, creators and producers of other goodies like ‘Gossip Girl’ and ‘The OC’. Therefore, a series awaits us between the urban thriller, with a crime and a nervous gang a la ‘Riverdale’, and political and social analysis.
A burning New York and an unsolved crime
It is important to start from a key fact: ‘City on Fire’ is based on the novel of the same name written by Garth Risk Hallberg. It was the first novel by this American writer and, with it, he swept away. A portrait written with skill and temper on the underworld of New York. A city that always seems to be the eternal protagonist but this time it will be another protagonist in the story.
Wyatt Oleff, Chase Sui Wonders, Jemima Kirke, Nico Tortorella, Ashley Zukerman, Xavier Clyde, Max Milner, Alexandra Doke, Omid Abtahi, Kathleen Munroe, John Cameron Mitchell, Geoff Pierson, and Beth Malone make up the main cast. As the fans of ‘Succession’ can see in the cover imagea, there are some familiar faces along with other renowned talents like the magnificent John Cameron Mitchell, comedy producer and singer in first-rate musicals.
The main plot reminds us that ‘City on Fire’ starts with a murder: A New York University student is found dead in Central Park on July 4, 2003. Without witnesses or evidence of a struggle, no one understands what could have happened. She left a concert that his friends were giving, warned that he would return, but he never did. All of this connects with a series of fires that run throughout the city.

Chase Sui Wonders (‘Generation’, HBO) and Wyatt Oleff —who played Peter Quill as a child in the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ saga— are Samantha and Charlie, two good friends who won’t leave a stone unturned until they solve this crime. Her friend was the victim of something unknown and the clue leads them to a wealthy neighborhood where a family full of secrets lives its slow collapse. If you want to know more, this Friday May 12 you have the answers.
