Vans is proud to announce the Vans x Daniel Johnston Collection in collaboration with the organization non-profit Hi, How Are You Project. The brand developed this collection from head to toe to celebrate and recognize the work of Daniel Johnston as an ambassador and advocate for mental health.
Who was Daniel Johnson
Daniel Johnston was an American musician, singer-songwriter, and artist., their songs have been described as tormented, presenting a mix between naif and dark music. On his earliest recordings, Johnston sang in a high register, but throughout the 1990s, his voice took on a completely new character, tone, and style of register and diction.

Johnston’s music and art have been cited by modern independent artists as inspiration. On September 11, 2019, Johnston was found dead of a suspected heart attack at his home in Texas.

The Vans x Daniel Johnston collection reinforces this sentiment through the drawn illustrations by hand that Johnston created for his first cassette tapes, and then distributed to friends and strangers.

In this collection, you will find the classic Vans skateboarding silhouettes with a Checkerboard created from these drawings, as well as the same grainy, lo-fi execution of his art.
The first silhouette that this collection presents is the traditional Skate SK8-Hi in raven grey, with small reproductions of the classic covers of cassettes hand drawn by Johnston and colored to create a custom Checkerboard pattern.
The Skate Authentic is the next silhouette to be presented in antique white and the Skate Slip-On repeating the raven gray hue along with each of the musician’s signature black and white artwork, with Johnston’s most notable character, Jeremiah the Frog, and his most recognized album, Hi, How Are You, printed on the side and the top.

All silhouettes in the collection include reinforced materials DURACAP for durability and classic PopCush energy return insoles.
Johnston artwork moves to pants Authentic Chino Loose Pant in Antique White with a Black Graphic Print with the artist’s illustrations.
A knitted tee with a monochrome checkerboard print accompanies artwork from some of the most iconic albums from Johnston as “Respect” and “Don’t Be Scared”.
The collection is completed with the t-shirt and the sweatshirt hoodie type with the legend ‘Respect’ in black, the classic Vans x Daniel Johnston “Off The Wall” long sleeve t-shirt and a deconstructed tote bag featuring Jeremiah the Frog’s featured image.
