For months we have been eagerly awaiting the next Windows 11 update, 24H2. This new version of the operating system is expected to arrive packed with changes, improvements and new features of all kinds. And we are not only talking about usability and features, but also internal changes, at the core level, that will (hopefully) turn Windows 11 into the system we should have received from day one.
Today, it seems that we have yet another new feature of all those that will be coming to this operating system. This time, we are talking about a new version of the Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM), specifically version 3.2. WDDM is the new default display driver for Windows, replacing the classic XDDM/XPDM that was used in Windows XP and previous versions. It is responsible for ensuring that everything related to graphics works properly, and it provides everything necessary to render the desktop and applications through Desktop Window Manager, the Microsoft system window manager.
WDDM 3.2 improvements
The new WDDM 3.2 is characterized mainly by two changes. The first of them is that, after years of waiting, Microsoft is going to change the default encoder to AV1. This will allow the entire desktop, all applications, and all games to take advantage of the compatibility and encoding capabilities of this video codec. This, in addition to allowing everything on the screen to look (a little) better, will also allow for much better performance in video encoding and decoding tasks thanks to hardware acceleration.
But this is not the only advantage that we are going to find in this new version of the graphics driver. And the new WDDM brings with it other features and improvements. One of the most important is a significant improvement in TDR (Timeout Detection and Recovery) debugging. And this means that, starting with Windows 11 24H2, the system will have many Less driver errors and crashes graphic or screen.
DxgkddiCollectDbgInfo, on the other hand, adds a new feature called “DxgkddiCollectDbgInfo2”, whose main purpose is to provide additional information about the timeout of a TDR driver, helping developers find the source of the problem much faster so that it can be fixed.
When is Windows 11 24H2 coming?
For the moment, Microsoft is only making this version of the operating system available to users who are registered in the Windows Insider program. In other words, Windows 11 24H2 is still a beta version that, while well advanced in development, is not ready to reach everyone.
The company is already debugging the errors, bugs and last-minute problems in order to be able to launch it as soon as possible to everyone. And, if all goes well, it should arrive sometime this month or, at the latest, next month. When it does, just search for it in Windows Update, download it and install it to start enjoying all its new features.
