As with any type of Windows problem, the first thing we need to do is identify the source of the problem, a very simple process thanks to the fact that Windows keeps a record of everything that happens on the computer, including system failures, which are clearly a system error.
To access Event Viewer, we must use the Windows search box with the same terms. Then, from the main screen, we double-click on Windows Registry and then click on System.
Next, we need to find the date on which the event occurred, an event that will be within the origin Power-Troubleshooter. By clicking on this event, it will show what the event was. hardware which has caused that event, so the solution is as simple as updating the drivers or removing it and reinstalling them.
Prevent PC from restarting instead of shutting down
Using the event viewer, it is possible to identify the problem and solve it. However, it is possible that it will continue to occur, so we will have to do a few more things in the system.
Disconnect all devices
Any device connected to the computer can be the cause of the PC restarting instead of shutting down when we give the corresponding instruction. To clear up any doubts and rule out that the origin of the problem is in one of the peripherals connected to the computer, we must disconnect it from the PC, even if they are turned off since the PC’s USB ports still have power.
Disable auto restart
Windows includes a feature enabled by default so that if the computer encounters an error during the shutdown process, it will automatically start up. To disable this feature, we must run the application sysdm.cpl from the Windows search box.
Next, click on Advanced options and then in the section Startup and recoverywe click on Configuration. Next, we must uncheck the box Auto Restartoption found in the section System error.
Disable Wake-on-LAN feature
This feature allows the PC to start via a network card in response to a user request. However, a router instruction may be affecting its operation and causing the computer to restart instead of shutting down.
The quickest way to disable this feature is through the BIOS where we must look for the option WoL either Wake-on-LAN to disable it. We can also do this process from Windows, although disabling them from the BIOS It is the safest and most effective process.
Restore Windows
If none of the solutions we have mentioned solve the problem, the only solution left to try is to restore Windows. This process is responsible for deleting all the applications that we have installed on the computer while keeping all the files, so it is a process that does not require making a backup of all the files.
Another option that we can try before restoring the computer is to restore the computer to an earlier time, when it did not have that problem. We can do this through the application Create a restore point and selecting the oldest copy where the computer did not reboot.
