If you have apps crashing on your Windows operating system and they use DirectX, you should know that there might be an explanation, and the culprit would be an update rolled out by Microsoft.

Microsoft has confirmed a new issue on Windows causing application crashes after update KB5019980, which dates from November 2022. Remember, this update notably fixed 6 major security flaws, but also changed the design of the taskbar search button. The problem is thatit would also have added a major bug for the Intel drivers.

According to the company, this issue affects outdated Intel GPU drivers, causing issues for applications using DirectX or Direct3D. ” You may receive an error with apphelp.dll on Windows devices using Intel graphics drivers with versions 26.20.100.7463 up to 30.0.101.1190 “Explains Microsoft on its official website. ” This issue may occur intermittently and affects apps that use DirectX or Direct3D to render some or all of their content “.

Some apps keep crashing on Windows

According to Microsoft, the Windows systems that are affected are Windows 11 version 22H2, Windows 10 version 22H2, Windows 11 version 21H2, Windows 10 version 21H2, Windows 10 version 20H2 and Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2019. A server version would also be impacted: Windows Server 2022.

Microsoft says thata fix will be made in a future update. However, it is not known exactly when the Redmond company will roll it out. As it seems to be an important bug, we imagine that it will be solved in priority.

Fortunately, there is already a workaround that affected users can try. Indeed, Microsoft says that the apphelp.dll bug affecting DirectX and Direct3D titles can usually be circumvented by downloading the latest Intel drivers. He recommends users install an Intel graphics driver whose version is later than 30.0.101.1190 “.

This pilot was released in December 2021. These can be found in Intel’s download area, and you can check out our guide on how to update your drivers if you don’t know how.
