One of the great advantages of having so many Android Auto compatible apps is that you have the opportunity to try and choose the one that best suits your tastes and needsIf we talk about navigation apps for Android Auto, you will find a few quality ones and most of them are free, but if there are two that take the cake in terms of popularity, they are Google Maps and Waze.
I have already explained that I prefer Waze to Google Maps when driving, but the reality is that both Google apps are quality: Maps shines in some functions over Waze and vice versa. If there is one tool where I like Waze, it is precisely the presence of radars, but why choose when you can have the best of both apps? This trick allows you to benefit from Waze’s radar warning while using Google Maps on Android Auto.
The comparison between Waze and Google Maps on Android Auto is close and beyond personal perceptions such as the interface, in other sections they can be evaluated objectively. Thus, while the first stands out for its radar warning, incidents and notifications on the route, Google Maps is better when it comes to showing points of interest, offers satellite view, allows route sharing… therefore it is normal that It is difficult to decide between one or the other beyond the inertia of using Google Maps simply because it comes standard.
When it comes down to it, if there’s one feature that makes a difference (especially if you like to step on the accelerator) it’s the roadside warnings for radars and other incidents, where Waze comes out on top due to its active community. But using Google Maps doesn’t mean giving up Waze’s alerts.…as long as you have both apps open and configured in a certain way.
Here’s how you can get Waze radar alerts on Google Maps with Android Auto
As we mentioned in the previous point, The key is to have both applications open. However, if you want to use the Google Maps interface, this will be the application that should appear in the foreground on your car infotainment system screen.
We will have previously opened Waze, which must be configured to have alerts enabledTo do this, in the Waze app on your mobile, go to ‘Settings‘ > ‘Alerts and notices‘ > ‘Notices(Important: in ‘Area’ make sure that ‘All’ is selected, which is the default option). All types of alerts will appear there in the form of a list. Move through the list and, one by one, configure the ones you are interested in receiving by enabling the toggles that appear.
Sticking to the radarswe would do it with the first options: Speed cameras and Traffic light cameras. Once you have configured this with the alerts that interest you, we return to the car.
Before starting the march, Launch Waze on Android Auto but don’t enter any routesjust leave it in the background. Then open Google Maps and enter the route and use it as usual: the moment Waze finds a speed camera on the road, you will receive the alert even if you have Google Maps on the screen.
