Older folks will remember System UI Tuner, a small, hidden Android tool that allowed us to make a number of changes to what we wanted to see in the mobile status bar and other settings. The tool is no longer in use, but a third-party app is determined to take its place: System UI Tuner.
We told you about System UI Tuner two years ago and the app has evolved a lot in those two years. It’s now easier than ever to get it working if you use Shizuku and it incorporates a lot of new tweaks.
No root, but with Shizuku
First of all, you should know that System UI Tuner no root or Magisk neededthough you’ll need to give it permission to tweak settings via ADB. This used to mean plugging your phone into a PC and running an ADB command, but it’s now much easier if you have Shizuku running on your phone. With Shizuku enabled, all you need to do is grant System UI Tuner permission with one tap.
Before continuing, please note that Using the application carries certain risksas the developer will force you to acknowledge during the prompt when you launch it. Some settings could cause the phone to stay on a black screen or cause something to not work properly. Also, many tweaks will not work on some layers such as MIUI, EMUI or ColorOS. The app highlights in red those settings that are most problematic.
Applications
System UI Tuner categorizes tweaks into different sections that are accessible from the side menu. The first of these is Applications and includes a couple of tweaks. You can, for example, enable freeform (resizable) windows, or Change the default installation location for appsif your mobile has MicroSD.
Audio and sound
The next section is Audio and Sound, which also has a couple of options, one of which, highlighted in red, can be somewhat problematic. From here you can, for example, Disable the warning that you have the volume too high when using the mobile phone with headphones.
Another interesting option allows you disable loading sound Or, even better, change different sounds on your phone with custom audio files. This way, you can change the sound that plays when you connect your phone to your car and similar.
Developer
In the developer section you will find a single option through which you can prevent adb from disconnecting after a certain period of inactivity, which can be somewhat frustrating if you are going to use it frequently.
Screen
In the screen section you can adjust the time it takes for the phone to lock securely after the screen is turned off, a custom scale size for fonts or set screen rotation with great attention to detail.
Also included here is a setting not too related to the display: the battery percentage at which battery saving mode will activate, as well as a somewhat problematic setting: night modeThe author warns us that this setting may cause the screen to go black and you will need to use an ADB command to restore.
Grid
System UI Tuner’s network settings are divided into three sections, each with a few tweaks. From the Mobile Data settings you can make some adjustments regarding the SMS service, while in Wi-Fi there is a tweak to try to Avoid tethering restrictions from some carriers.
Finally, in the miscellaneous section you will find a complete customization on How airplane mode behaves. With this tweak You can choose whether you want Airplane mode to turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC, and mobile data, or just some of them.
Interactions
Within interactions you will find options to adjust how interactions work. Notifications, the status bar, and quick settings Android. In some ways, it’s the most similar section to the original Android System UI Tuner.
In notifications you can, for example, include the do not disturb button in the volume control, while in the status bar you can choose precisely What icons do you want to display or not?including seconds on the clock or battery percentage.
System
Within the system section you will find a single setting, but it can be useful if you have very little space on your phone. The setting allows you to prevent Android from constantly loading bother you by telling you that you have little spaceprecisely choosing what percentage of available storage it should alert you at.
UI
One of the sections that has more settings to change is the UI. Here you can make some changes. Settings for how gestures workkeep the screen on when the phone is charging, activate gestures to open the camera or a custom animation scale.
Advanced
Finally we have Advancedwith a handful of options aimed at those who know exactly what they want to change and can’t find that option in the other sections. Here you can cchange a system variable (if you know his name) by hand.
It is also possible make the app show all the tweaksbecause System UI Tuner hides some settings that it knows shouldn’t work on your phone because you’re using a certain layer of Android. If you’d rather see everything, you can, although you’re warned that if they’re hidden it’s probably because they don’t work or cause problems.
