An evolution of the entry-level motor for e-bikes, the Yamaha PW-C2 targets affordable city models with more torque and still an automatic mode.
Yamaha has an incredible range of activities, including mobility including cycling. Less known in the cycle world for the general public, the Japanese manufacturer nevertheless marketed the first modern VAE in 1993. And it manufactures renowned bicycle engines, with the latest being the Yamaha PW-C2.
+10% torque for 2023
We already knew the previous electric motors, including the mid-range PW-S2 seen on the latest Yamaha Booster or the Winora Yucatan X8, or the high-performance PW-XM. But the brand also wanted to improve its entry-level PW-CE, launched in 2020, in PW-C2, with some changes.
There remains a central block, installed in the crankset. This type of motor is the most natural on an electric bike, because it is proportional to the pedaling in line with a torque sensor. This electric assistance is intended for city bikes, because it remains bulky, with a modest torque. However, it goes from 50 to 55 Nm at peak, clamped to 250 W as required by the regulations, and contains its weight at 3 kg (compared to 2.9 kg for the old one).
An automatic mode bicycle motor selected by a French brand
Yamaha promises that this PW-C2 is very quiet, operating through four levels of assistance: High, Standard, Eco and Eco+. As for the PW-S2 or the previous CE, an automatic mode makes it possible to avoid juggling between levels, improving autonomy in passing.
Of course, a walk mode is integrated, pushing the bike up to 6 km/h at the press of a button. The maximum speed is 25 km/h, remaining within the legal framework for electric bicycles in France and Europe.
For the moment, only the French bike Matra i-Flow has announced the integration of this Yamaha PW-C2 engine. It will replace the PW-CE, which had seduced some other models like the Raymon Cityray. Associated with a 500 Wh battery, the engine would offer a theoretical autonomy of more than 100 km, in Eco mode.
The new Yamaha PW-C2 engine faces the Bosch Active Line which is an excellent competitor.
