In essence, it is a method by which cybercriminals try to obtain your personal data by making two different calls to you, each one pretending to be a different person or entity. Obviously, we are talking about a case of vishing or phone phishing.

You can even change company

The modus operandi of this type of scam makes us receive first a call as someone impersonating your current company. Generally informs of the next increase in your quota, with amounts between 15 and 20 euros as a general rule, according to those affected. The caller is not your operator, but these scammers who will contact you again later.

For the second callwhich should arrive a few minutes later, are acting on behalf of an additional company, offering you a good deal on signing up for your line with them.

Aware that our operator is apparently going to raise prices, something that may be true, but not in the way that scammers communicate it, we can give our arm to twist and accept a portability that we would not otherwise have wanted.

In most cases, the aim of everything is to obtain bank or payment details from the victim in order to steal their money, under the premise that they need them to process the registration in the new company and manage the direct debit. In others, they are unscrupulous commercials subcontracted by a telephone company who will deliberately cause your portability in order to charge different types of incentives and commissions.

Sometimes there are even aggravating factors in the form of persuasion these scammers use. As reported by the Organization of Consumers and Users, sometimes they even mention that this destination company is the one they should change to because “It is the one recommended by OCU”.

Faced with this identity theft, this consumer rights defense organization not only reports the case, but also recalls that “OCU only makes its recommendations through its publications, and it is illegal to use the OCU name for commercial or advertising purposes”.
