Android 14 continues to reveal features thanks to the first version of its ROM for developers, the ‘Android 14 Developers Version 1’ that was released yesterday and that soon it will enter the beta phase that we can enjoy on our Xiaomi phones.
One of those characteristics that now appear has to do with the future death of physical SIM cards. Cards that, it seems, their days are numbered because a tool will arrive on board Android 14 that will mean the beginning of its end. In the future we will have Xiaomi phones without physical SIMs.
Xiaomi phones without physical SIM cards
It so happens that the well-known Android expert Mishaah Rahman has discovered a new feature on board the developer preview of Android 14. An apparently hidden feature that will allow us, once it is active, to convert any physical SIM card on an eSIM.
In other words, we can use a physical SIM in our mobile phone to program the eSIM to accompany it on our own. Something valid only for the models that have these two cards, of course, but that would allow us to insert the physical SIM into the phone, convert it to an electronic SIM and remove the first one from the phone.
This functionality will not only require that our future Xiaomi with Android 14 have both SIM formats, but also that our operator supports the use of electronic SIM cards. Although in the case of Spain, this is no longer a serious problem because are accepted in all majorand many of the virtual ones.
According to Mishaal, the characteristic is hidden right now in Android 14 DP1 and it requires some adjustment (and secondary application) to make it emerge. But it is the unequivocal sign that Google, through Android, is working so that we will soon be able to do without our physical cards. And that our Xiaomi phones of the future, with Android 14 and later, can get rid of the plastic and the SIM chip forever.
