Google Maps now lets us save our favorite places highlighting them on the map with any emojiinstead of being limited to the heart icon for favourites, the flag for “want to go”, the star for featured sites, and the label for tagged places.
Now, Google Maps lists can be embellished with any emojiwhich opens the door for us to finally differentiate between our different lists on the map, instead of finding a ton of the same icons on the map.
Emojis come to Google Maps
Google Maps allows us to highlight our favorite sites in several ways. For input, we have default lists for featured, favorite and want to go sites, in addition to other more specific ones such as travel plans. Each of these lists comes with an icon and a specific color.
Although we can create custom lists, all of them ended up with the same icon, making it impossible to differentiate them from each other. There was no way to tell from the map which places belonged to the “coffee shops you must visit before you die” and which are “the most horrible coffee shops I’ve ever tried in my life”.
Now Google has finally opened the season, leaving us customize the icon of each list with any emoji from our selection. We will see this new setting in new and existing lists, clicking on choose icon on your information screen.

In this way, instead of being displayed as one more list with the same icon as always, you can associate any emoji from the extensive list available on Android.
This personalized emoji will appear both when you open the list itself and on the map, integrated in the bubble that highlights the place. Of course, for my taste the icon is too small and a bit difficult to distinguish in some cases.

This small change opens up the ability to customize your map with recommendations that can be differentiated from each other much better than before, in exchange for spending a good time configuring the emoji for each list. The novelty is already available for users of the latest version of the application.
