You no longer need a thermometer at home, your mobile phone can do it on its own. Of course, not all of them, since only a limited series of Google smartphones have this possibility and perhaps yours is one of them. The brand introduced a sensor in some of its latest releases whose capacity is to measure the temperature of people and objects that surround you, but their functionality was limited in Spain until recent days.
Time goes by and mobile phones advance, adapting more and more to people’s daily lives and their needs. More than 300 years have passed since the thermometer was invented and it is likely that today we are closer than ever to its disappearance. It is clear that this is not something that will happen in the short term, since the price of mobile phones that measure temperature is considerably far from what a thermometer costs, but who knows how long it will take to see this technology in more affordable models that at the same time allow us to gain access to all the functionalities of a smartphone combined with those of a thermometer.

This is something that Google has made a reality with the models Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XLwhich are the only mobile phones currently that incorporate a sensor along with the cameras that can measure the temperature in a series of simple steps. We have already tested it and if you happen to have one of the smartphones mentioned, we will show you how to do it.
Measure the temperature with a Google Pixel
It is worth noting that this feature was previously available in other countries, but it has just arrived in Spain. To measure the temperature with a Google Pixel, you have to download the Pixel Thermometer app from the Play Store. If you don’t have one of the three compatible Pixels, it won’t even appear in the app store, so don’t even bother.
Once you have it installed, follow these steps:
- Open the Thermometer app.
- Select the Object Temperature option.
- Touch the material of the object whose temperature you want to measure.
- Point your Google Pixel’s camera and sensor at the person or object in question.
- Tap the screen to start measuring.
You’re probably wondering about its accuracy and true functionality. Well, the truth is that the accuracy is not as good as that of a conventional thermometer, but it is a good very useful tool on certain occasions, such as to find out the temperature of an object placed in the sun out of sheer curiosity or to check if you have a fever. In the video attached to this post you can check the ability of the Google Pixel 9 Pro to measure the temperature of the other model placed on the table and the result is quite accurate. Dirt on the lens also plays a role, which can interfere with the temperature reading. It is an interesting feature that remains to be seen how it will evolve in the future and what it can bring to the lives of users, although the truth is that we really liked the tests we carried out and they were quite entertaining.
