It is becoming easier to find things on the Internet.. We write some terms, we select some filters if we are looking for a particular content (images, videos, news)… et voilà! Results served on a tray. But, of course, it is not always so easy: Sometimes we can have something in mind and not know how to describe it. in terms that we can type in a search form.
Like, for example, when we have a melody in our heads and we want to find the video clip of the song to which it corresponds. How do you describe that? The logical thing to do would be to whistle it or, better yet, hum it, right? Well, that’s what those responsible for YouTube have thought.
And it is that the YouTube mobile app has introduced —for now, only for some users, and only in the testing phase— a very useful function that allows users to find songs by humming or whispering the melody. If this functionality were to be consolidated and widely implemented in one of the most used apps for accessing music across the globe, it could change the way we experience music.

How does it work
This new ‘hum search’ functionality works thanks to a system based on machine learning (that is, thanks to artificial intelligence), as Krishna Kumar, a product manager at Google, points out. The process involves comparing the hummed sequences to thousands of songs in the global database and finding matches in real time. It’s a process that takes the unique melody of a studio-recorded song and compares it to the user’s hum or whisper.
To access this feature, users need to turn on voice search within the YouTube app. Once activated, they can hum or sing a song for at least three seconds, after which the app will decode the melody and will search your huge YouTube music library for matches.
Once the song is identified, users are directed to relevant videos featuring the searched songbe it the official music video, user-generated content or one of the popular “Shorts”.
The feature is still in the testing phase and is only available to a small portion of Android users.
The integration of this function could also influence the platform’s recommendation algorithm, which would lead to more personalized and relevant content for each user.
It is not the first time that we see this technology in action: Google, the company that owns YouTube, It already launched a similar function three years ago for its voice assistant, Google Assistant.. The novelty is that implementing it on YouTube allows users to carry out these music searches without having to change the application.
