Today, Amazon is expanding its music streaming offering by giving Prime members all 100 million songs in its Amazon Music library for free. Although it comes with certain conditions to distinguish itself from the service Music Unlimitedthis new free offer is one of the most interesting in the field.
100 million free titles for Prime members
Previously, if you wanted to listen to Amazon Music and its library of 100 million songs, you had to subscribe to the company’s paid Amazon Music Unlimited plan. Now, in an even more aggressive move than Apple Music’s $4.99 voice plan, Amazon Music is opening up its collection of tracks to anyone who already pays the annual fee to be a Prime member.
The changes to Amazon Music’s catalog for Prime members come with some caveats, however. In order to encourage customers to subscribe to Music Unlimited to get the full experience, those who choose the standard tier will not get full access. On the other hand, all Prime members will be able to access the Amazon Music catalog by selecting artists, albums and playlists. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to ask Alexa to play the song that’s been on your mind.
For that, you’ll need to upgrade to the $9 per month subscription in the form of Amazon Music Unlimited with 30 days currently free. Today’s new Amazon Music update effectively turns the free service into Spotify’s standard music streaming offering, but without the ads. Something to help many users in this difficult period due to soaring prices.
It’s also another way for Amazon to justify raising the price of its Prime membership earlier this year. In February, the company announced that, for the first time in four years, the subscription price would increase. Will giving access to its entire musical catalog be enough to retain the hundreds of millions of Prime subscribers… the future will tell!
