ChatGPT caught Google a bit off guard and to compensate during Google I/O we had a bit of an overdose of artificial intelligence, which will hit everywhere. Also to Android Studio in the form of a bot to generate and correct code.
The preview version of Android Studio, Android Studio Hedgehog, includes Studio Bota conversational AI that you can ask for help while building apps to get information or directly ready-to-use code.
Android Studio Copilot is Studio Bot
Open AI has Copilot and Google is preparing Studio Bot, a conversational AI built into Android Studio. Inside, the chatbot is based on Codey, a descendant of Palm 2 code specialist.
Studio Bot lives inside Android Studio, although to pay it a visit we are going to need to use at least the canary version, Android Studio Hedgehog. As with the rest of the AI innovations presented by Google, for now it is only in English and in the United States.
Google regard Studio Bot as an experiment and they don’t seem to be very confident in their abilities yet: “sometimes you can provide inaccurate, misleading or false information and present it with confidence.”
You can ask Studio Bot questions about Android documentation or the use of Android Studio and in specific cases it can generate and add the code to the project for you. You can also invoke it from a text selection, to get answers about it.
Studio Bot send your requests to Google, but not your code. Of course, if you make requests where you include part of your code, it will be sent to Google’s servers, but it will not be used to train the system.
