The muscle memory of many iPhone users is going to be put to the test. Among the many changes made by Apple to iOS 17, one of them will require reviewing a well-established habit.
Update 08/16 — Phew! Apple has backpedaled with the 7th beta of iOS 17: the button that allows you to hang up calls is again centered on the screen. On the other hand, it remains framed by two other buttons whereas previously, it was all alone.
Original article, 9/08 — During a phone call on the iPhone, it is impossible to miss the button that allows you to hang up the call: it is big, it is red, and it has always been placed at the bottom of the screen, centered, and well separated from the other buttons. Admittedly, its interface has evolved over time, but the location has not changed.
All good things must come to an end: as noted CNBC, the hang up button loses its luster with iOS 17! It certainly retains its red color which allows it to stand out, but the button falls into line. It is simply present at the end of the second row of buttons. All iPhone users who had become accustomed to hanging up by touching the isolated button of others will have to change it.
We also note that the layout of the other buttons has evolved, they are no longer in the same places (the icon to mute the sound is thus found on the right). On the occasion of iOS 17, Apple has brought a few other new features for calls. The illustration of the contact who calls can be personalized via his contact card, and FaceTime hosts an answering machine function to record an audio or video message.

This is obviously not the first time that Apple has changed the little habits of its users. Usually it’s for the best… but sometimes it doesn’t work out at all! This had been the case with Safari, whose interface had been heavily redesigned in the first betas of iOS 15. The novelty had not been very popular, so much so that Apple had to revise its copy by hiding this new interface .
