Tech News Desk – The era of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has arrived and people all over the world are using it to make life easier. AI is being used for writing notes, writing poetry, coding and making music. As soon as this technology came, its disadvantages also started coming to the fore. Creating deepfake images and videos became one of them. A person in China went one step further and cheated a person of more than Rs 5 crore by using deepfake technique. You will also be surprised to know about the incident.
A scammer in China used highly advanced ‘deepfake’ technology to persuade a person to transfer money to his account, Reuters reported. The scammers used AI-powered face-swapping technology and impersonated a close friend of the victim. Police said the fraudster impersonated the victim’s friend over a video call and asked him to transfer 4.3 million yuan (about Rs 5 crore).
The victim transferred the money believing that his friend was in dire need of the money during the bidding process. The police also revealed that the victim realized this only after his friend feigned ‘ignorance of the situation’. Police have recovered most of the stolen money and are working to trace the remaining amount. The incident raised concerns in China about the use of AI to commit financial crimes.
