The use of artificial intelligence for facial recognition of people is already a reality in the Ukraine conflict. This is how Clearview AI works in the country that is being invaded.
One month after the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, many fronts have been opened in war, social, economic and, of course, cyber terms. In just a few weeks of conflict, it has been possible to observe how a certain stagnation has occurred in a war that seemed like it would barely last a few days due to the incredible difference between the two sides. After having Vladimir Putin’s initial plan gone to wastewhat can we expect?
Everything seems to indicate that the war will last for a while yet. In this context, intelligence can be essential to mark the meaning of it to one side or the other. The presence of spies in opposing territory may be the weight that tips the balance. Therefore, both countries will spare no effort to prevent their plans from being leaked to the enemy. In this sense, it is known that Ukraine is receiving foreign aid from the community that makes up NATO.
Even so, it is private companies that, on a voluntary basis, are trying to contribute to balance a completely unfavorable situation for the invaded country. In this context, how do you detect possible Russian spies among the ranks of the Ukrainian army or, simply, among the apparent civilian population? To avoid any possible intruder, it is worth noting the presence of a revolutionary technology based on artificial intelligence. Clearview AI holds the key.
A facial recognition technology to detect Russian spies
For these purposes, it is important to bear in mind that we are facing a country in which there is a great Russian influence, including the language. This makes it even more difficult to detect possible intruders who intend to pass information to Russian troops. The technology being developed is notable for having a database of millions of peoplewhich allows an immediate scan.
The analysis is based on the treatment of images for their subsequent comparison with a database in which there are up to 2,000 million photos from VKontakte, an important platform available in Russia. In this way, it is possible that the alarm goes off in the successive population controls that are occurring daily in many of the affected cities for the conflict in Ukraine. Now, what other functions can this face detection system serve?
Bearing in mind that we are facing a war, it seems logical to think that many soldiers who have fallen in combat cannot be easily recognized. The use of this type of technology will allow, with greater precision, know the identity of the person in order to repatriate his body. Even so, the corresponding DNA tests must be carried out to ensure that it is a specific person. The latter is directly linked to the problem that follows.
A facial recognition system that should be, only, indicative
Imagine for a moment that a person is at a checkpoint and, being completely oblivious to the conflict, appears as a possible intruder in artificial intelligence application. The Armed Forces, in this case, Ukrainian, could arrest the protagonist or, what is worse, shoot him. To what extent is this technology reliable? It seems that its hit rate is very high, but the truth is that it should have a maximum efficiency to be taken into account.
Be that as it may, the use of this solution only emphasizes To what extent is there distrust among the population and the Ukrainian army. The intelligence services are being essential for the course of the war and, proof of this, is that Ukraine has been able to safeguard most of its positions during the first month of the conflict. Will this position continue to hold for much longer? It’s still early to tell, but with this kind of help, it might be possible.
Notably Clearview AI’s positioning is clear, since Hoan Ton-That, the company’s greatest exponent, only showed his intention to support Ukraine through the contribution of this technology. It is known that it is already being used by the troops of the invaded country, something that can help in the early detection of enemies in the ranks of the Ukrainian army.
