Meta has taken an important step by bringing Horizon Worlds to cell phones and computers. Previously only available on its virtual reality (VR) headsets, this 3D social platform is now available on mobile devices and the web, the company announced Thursday:
“To start, a small group of people can now access Super Rumble through the Meta Quest app on Android devices, while the iOS version will be available in the coming weeks,” Meta stated. “Early access is also enabled in any web browser at horizon.meta.com.”
In fact, you can enter from this moment and try some of the experiences that this site offers. Do you remember the video games from several years ago that were on Facebook? Well, its aesthetics are quite similar, although with more interesting additions such as movement and adventure mechanics.
The company assures that there will be more updates over time: “as we launch more worlds in the coming months, you will be able to spend time with friends, enjoy Free comedy shows and concerts, all from any web-connected device«.
Now that Meta Horizon Worlds is available on cell phones and computers, you will only be able to play Super Rumble, as confirmed by Meta spokesperson Bryan Pope. Pope mentioned that more worlds will be available “soon”. This means that this is a fairly limited initial release, since in the virtual reality version, players have access to a wide variety of experiences created by the company and other users.
However, this initial launch could be an important milestone in broader ambitions in the metaverse. The company stated: “The metaverse should be accessible to everyone, regardless of the device they use.”
“While Quest headsets offer the most immersive experience for accessing the metaverse, we believe there should be multiple entry points. Bringing Meta Horizon Worlds to cell phones and computers (and more platforms) is a step towards realizing that vision and opening the experience to more people.
Launching on mobile and web has been a long process. The company began discussing it publicly last year, and Vishal Shah, vice president of metaverse at Meta, mentioned that the company already had a working version of the mobile version last year that they ultimately did not release. “It was a little too similar to a mobile VR game rather than a native mobile experience,” Shah said in an interview with Lowpass.
Meta will likely talk more about Horizon Worlds and its efforts in the metaverse at its Connect conference scheduled for September 27-28. Remember to subscribe to our Newsletter for more related articles like this.
