Samsung is rolling out the One UI 6.1 update to various devices, but some older models like the Galaxy S21 and Z Flip 3 are being left behind. While the new models benefit from a full set of AI-powered features, these older flagships are getting a version that may disappoint some.
The latest Samsung system update, One UI 6.1, was introduced with the Galaxy S24 series. With it comes the promise of a range of innovations that are well known as Galaxy AI. These features, designed to facilitate the daily use of smartphones, have been widely appreciated. Initially deployed on the latest flagships and tablets such as the Galaxy Z Fold 5 and the series Galaxy S23these improvements seem reserved to the models most recent.
However, a recent expansion of this update to older devices revealed a policy of selective update. Users of the models Galaxy S21Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 discovered that their One UI 6.1 update only included Google’s “Circle to Search” feature. That is to say that it does not understand advanced tools like live translation and navigation assistance. This limitation marks a clear difference compared to the capabilities offered by more recent models.
AI on old Samsung flagships disappoints
Regarding the absence of certain Galaxy AI features on older models, several hypotheses can be advanced. First, it’s possible that the Galaxy S21, Galaxy Z Fold 3, and Galaxy Z Flip 3 simply don’t have no necessary skills. Their processing power or memory may be insufficient to support the requirements of new AI features.
On the other hand, Samsung could also deliberately limit updates on its old models for encourage the public to migrate towards new devices. This strategy, while beneficial for new smartphone sales, can generate frustration among loyal users who want to keep their devices up to date with the latest innovations without having to invest in a new phone.
