The very knowledgeable Mark Gurman has added weight to rumors that the iPhone 14 will feature a 48MP camera on its Pro model range when it releases later this year.
In a new “Power On” video, the American journalist reiterated much of what we’ve already heard about the iPhone 14. Namely, that Apple is sticking to an iPhone-like design 13, but with subtle changes to the notch, colorways, and cameras.
End of the notch and the iPhone mini
For starters, Gurman has once again confirmed that a “pill” shaped cutout for Face ID will replace the notch on the iPhone 14 Pro with a new, redesigned Face ID. He also repeated claims that Apple will ditch the iPhone 14 mini for an iPhone 14 Max, abandoning the small smartphone market, expecting an iPhone SE 4 in 2023 that could take over that role with a design change.
A historic change to the main camera
Perhaps the most important information in the video is the new attestation that the iPhone 14 Pro would have a 48MP wide-angle camera to take better quality photos in normal conditions, the device returning to 12 Mpx when the brightness is not optimal. A feature already mentioned by Ming-Chi Kuo recently who explained that the diagonal of the 48MP sensor will increase by 25-35%, and the height of the 7P lens of the 48MP will increase by 5-10%.
According to Gurman, the lens of the regular iPhone 14 will remain a 12MP camera. He also reiterated rumors that Apple might add emergency SMS and SOS calling via satellite.
The purple color back?
Finally, Mr. Gurman claims that Apple is working on new colors for the iPhone. Reports on Friday suggest that one of those colors could be a shade of purple that changes under certain lights, for both the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max and normal models.
Release date and price
The iPhone 14 is expected for a presentation in early September with a launch before the end of the month, like almost every year. Among the novelties, we also expect a slightly more rounded design and an A16 chip engraved in 4 nm. All this for the same price as today, i.e. 909€ for the iPhone 14 and 1159€ for the iPhone 14 Pro. The only unknown remains on the price of the iPhone 14 Max which, according to us, would be 1009€. Unless there is a good surprise and Apple decides to lower the base 14 by €100.
