Apple has just released the first beta of iOS 17, which gives the opportunity to test the new features brought by the update. Among them is StandBy Mode, which turns your iPhone into a mini-tablet while it is charging. We explain how it works.
That’s it, the first beta of iOS 17 is available for developers. After a remarkable presentation at WWDC 2023, the operating system is now in the hands of users who can test (almost) all its new features. The star of the moment is none other than StandBy Mode, which radically transforms your smartphone’s screen when charging.
To put it simply, the StandBy mode offers quick and easy access to various information, all visible from a great distance. It is possible to display widgets, a clock serving as an alarm clock or even a photo slideshow. However, it requires certain conditions to be met in order to be activated. So here’s how to go about it.
How to Enable StandBy Mode on iOS 17
Theoretically, Standby Mode is available for all iPhones compatible with iOS 17. However, it only reveals its real usefulness with the always-on mode, which is only found on the iPhone 14 at present. Anyway, you will have to go through the Settings to take advantage of it. Here are the steps to follow :
- Open them Settings on your iPhone
- See you in the section standby
- Activate the option standby

Once done, certain conditions must be met for the mode to activate on its own. Here they are :
- Your iPhone must be locked
- Your iPhone must be plugged into Lightning Or in wireless mode with a MagSafe or Qi charger
- Your iPhone must be in sideways position (landscape mode)
All that remains is to configure the StandBy mode as you see fit. In total, you will find 3 screens : a screen for widgets, a screen for photos and a screen for the clock. The widgets screen allows you to scroll between different applications and interact with their content. It is possible to add the widgets of your choice using the + button.
By default, the photos screen displays images stored in your gallery, but you can also configure it to display images according to a predefined theme, such as nature, animals or cities. Finally, it is possible to customize the color of the clock screen, as well as the time zone displayed.
