Mine with the star feature of iOS 17 was not exactly love at first sight: as soon as I installed the latest version of Apple's operating system on my phone I had mixed feelings about the sleep mode. Thus, I complained about the greater wear and tear on the screen due to it being on for longer and the lack of usability of the phone in that mode and with that layout. Yes, the above is true, but then I gave it another chance and started using it during my uploads so reality would prove me wrong. In fact I am clear that With StandBy mode I win more than I lose.
In case you haven't taken advantage of this feature yet, This is the idea: If you have an iPhone with Always on Display and sleep mode activated (Note: you can do it from 'Settings' > 'Sleep' and there activate the toggle), when you charge the iPhone and the device is horizontal, the phone screen will remain on, showing useful information such as the clock, calendar, a photo to use it as a kind of digital frame or even widgets. If you charge your mobile at night and you are worried about the light, the StandBy mode has several less annoying formats, in fact it is changed only to illuminate less.
Turning my iPhone into a kind of smart display is a good idea
Let's face it, I have several Echo Shows at home and one of the things I appreciate most is precisely that information is displayed on the screen, so a priori I think turning my phone into some kind of smart screen sounded good to mebut as I anticipated in the intro, having the panel always on and running did not seem like the smartest thing to do right away to charge it as soon as possible.
On the other hand, I have a support that I don't usually use too much and it is not MagSafe type, but has a cable. Then I discovered that support is not necessary. In fact, I usually connect the charger and leave the phone right on top, arranged horizontally. It seems silly, but I really value buying an accessory if I'm not going to get the most out of it.
Then I realized something: I usually always charge my phone in the mornings, during the first hours of work when the terminal is silent and unused. In reality, notifications are not that important and even within the standby mode options you can choose whether you want them to be displayed or not. In other words, the general rule in my daily life is do not use the phone while charging it, but if one day there is an important notification, which it would take anyway, whether it is in Standby or charging like usual. Once in your hands, moving it from horizontal to vertical for handling is effortless.
Finally, there is the paradoxical issue of using up battery power while charging it, but as happens with charging your phone without airplane mode, its effect is not significant: yes, It may use minimally more battery, but it is not dramatic. In fact, in practice, a full charge may take a couple of minutes longer. Another thing is that on a specific day I need to charge it quickly: in that case I do try to ensure that there are no exits in the energy balance that the charging process entails.
Regarding the deterioration of the screen, it is clear that the more you have the panel on, the worse and more risk there is of possible burning of burned pixels, but common sense must also be applied in the face of risks that have never personally occurred: use plus the phone that was five years ago (when I had the iPhone 11 Pro, also with an OLED screen) and I have never had any screen wear issues.. It is not necessary to give up a useful function or have a real concern about something that has not occurred.
So today, during that relatively short period of time that the phone charges, I have a watch with a calendar on hand, general information that never hurts me. And I also have an extra: notifications are much larger than normal with the StandBy mode active, so in practice and with the phone on silent so as not to bother me in those first hours of the day, I realize sooner if something important has reached me by taking a look at it from the chair where I work. This is not my case, but with interactive widgets you could even turn off a smart light bulb comfortably.
