Instagram also wants to compete against the sexual content that some people send through the app’s direct messages. According to the developer Alessandro Paluzzithe Meta-owned social network is testing a new feature that will allow users to choose a nudity protection option, in which different measures will be carried out to prevent the recipient from seeing the image that they have previously sent.
The nudity protection function allows, in particular, block and avoid seeing the sexual content that the user receives through messages. To do this, and as Paluzzi shows in the capture of the function, Instagram, through a technology, “will cover” the photos that contain nudity and that have previously been sent by the sender. The app, yes, will not have access to them to scan them, something that Apple also claims to do with its nudity alternates in iMessage.
Once Instagram detects and hides the photo, it will display a warning to the recipient that the image they have received contains — or could contain — nudity. It will also offer a button to view it. On the other hand, the app will also show information and tips for the user who has received that image.
The function also can be optionally activated, and disable at any time through the app settings. It is not clear, yes, if Instagram will keep it activated by default for those minors who use the social network.
Instagram joins Apple and creates a nudity alert system
The Instagram feature is, in fact, very similar to what Apple is already offering for iMessage. The Cupertino company, specifically, privately scans those images sent by your messaging platform, also maintaining end-to-end encryption. In case one of those scanned images contains sexual content, such as nudity, the platform will completely blur it and display different options on the screen.
One of them is the possibility of seeing the image anyway. However, also offers a function to block the contactwrite to someone of legal age to alert them that we have received an explicit image, or search for “other ways to find help”, where advice focused especially on minors will be shown.
At the moment, it is unknown when nudity protection will start working on Instagram. The one offered by Apple, however, is already available in the Messages app.
