When the iPad mini 6 was launched last fall, Apple offered an intelligent volume button orientation function to adapt to the grip of the small tablet in all circumstances. With iPadOS 15.4, this feature has been extended to the rest of the iPad lineup. Here’s how to change the iPad volume buttons according to their orientation on iPad, iPad Air, and iPad Pro.
A handy setting in some cases
Spotted by matt birchlerthe new volume button customization option is finally available on more iPads than the last mini.
To start, you need the version Release Candidate iPadOS 15.4, or the final version arriving next week. The previous betas do not allow you to have the novelty.
The default setting enabled on the iPad is “fixed position volume controls”. But now, with the ability to disable this option, the “volume buttons will dynamically change depending on the orientation of your iPad” Apple tells us.
Although it might take some getting used to, it’s nice to have the option of dynamic buttons when you’re handling your tablet often. If you are the type to always leave it in the same orientation with a Magic Keyboard for example, it will be less useful.
- Open the Settings app on your iPad (under iPadOS 15.4).
- Choose “Sounds” from the left sidebar.
- At the bottom, you can disable the fixed position volume buttons.
Now, the volume up (+) button will stay on the right side or top when you hold your iPad in landscape or portrait mode – either way. Logically, the volume down button (-) will remain on the left side or at the bottom, in all circumstances.
Note that the 6th generation iPad mini is configured differently than other iPads, with the volume buttons located on the same side as the power button.
