Periodically, data is leaked on products that will still take years to reach the market. The reason is that they work on them, not only in design, but also in tests and optimization that ends up being published “by mistake”. Thanks to a performance by Permon of Intel we know the nuclei names of CPUs Lunar Lakewhich will be Lion Cover and Skymont.
We have been able to see in the last generations of Intel processors a great change in design. They go from a monolithic design (a single type of core) to a heterogeneous design (two types of cores)
It is interesting, on the other hand, to see how AMD will replicate this design in its own processors. They bring something that has been happening on smartphones with ARM’s big.LITTLE design.
Surnames of the new Intel processors
processors Intel Lunar Lake should be released between last quarter of 2024 and the first of 2025. These models are intended for laptops, so their launch will be in block. Very possibly it would be for 2025, since the desktop models would be launched before.
Work is being done on the optimization and minor adjustments of these processors that would already be developed. The normal simplified process is computerized research and design, “printing” of the first test models, performance and feature optimizations, and finally production.
It seems that we are in the moment of optimization and adjustments. Hence a code update has been released for these processors. Thanks to this update we know the name of the two types of cores.
We have the lion cove architecture for the P Core and the skymont architecture for the E-Core. As usual, the company continues with the current design for its new processors. What we do not know is the configuration or, rather, the number of cores that will integrate.
Lunar Lake will use a process of own production for the nuclei and a external process for the iGPU. Although it is not confirmed, everything indicates that the cores would be based on the Intel 18A process. All items are will be mounted on a Foveros platea system developed by Intel to “glue” the different parts.
This new family of processors, according to rumors, will be based on a new architecture. It will be a construction from scratch seeking to offer a huge increase in performance per watt.
Indicate that Lunar Lake would be an architecture for laptops. These processors will add an iGPU Xe2-LPG, looking to offer graphics power for games. The idea would be to compete with the AMD Ryzen processors for laptops that are gaining a lot of popularity.
They need a jump in their iGPUs
Currently, AMD is taking over the laptop and Mini PC market in stride. Its processors offer a large number of cores and good integrated graphics. This means that you can have a competent computer to play more or less well for little money.
Intel has always had the same problem: its integrated graphics cards. Historically, you couldn’t ask them to move a game, they just happened to take video. It seems that this is changing, but it still has a long way to go to get closer to AMD’s offer.
Increased competition is good for us, the users, since we have more offer and better prices.
