The ban on mobile phone use in the classrooms of Spain is at the center of the educational debate for 2024, with a somewhat diverse current situation. On the one hand, all the Autonomous Communities have spoken out following the Government's proposal that we learned about last December, with diverse positions.
In fact, some like Euskadi have rejected the veto, proposing lines of action that are based on the training of students and families. It is a hot topic, with an open debate, although today we know the first implications, with two regions that will apply the veto starting next Monday.
Students from Murcia and Galicia will not be able to take their cell phones to class
After the Government's proposal, the communities opened the debate, with separate meetings that take place these first days of the year. But there are two that have acted more quickly than any other: the Region of Murcia and Galicia.
First of all, Murcian students will return to classes on January 8, but with an important change: They will not be able to use the mobile phone during school hours. The Ministry of Education has published the instructions that detail the veto, commenting that if they take it to the educational center, they must be turned off at all times:
The use of mobile phones and other electronic devices will not be allowed for students in educational centers during the school day, understood as the period of time that includes school hours, recreation time and periods dedicated to complementary and extracurricular activities. , unless it is expressly provided for in the educational project of the center for educational purposes. Use will also be understood as the fact of keeping said devices operational.
As commented in La Verdad, the ban on cell phones worries teachers, who must enforce this rule, surely rejected by the students. It is not something new in the region, since many institutes have long had clear indications about this (ultimately, educational centers have autonomy to make some decisions).
What educational stages does the Murcian veto affect? Well, from Primary Education to Vocational Training (FP), passing through Secondary and Baccalaureate. The Department of Education of the Region of Murcia specifies some more details in the instructions, such as the measures that should emphasize “risk prevention and safety in the use of the Internet and social networks by students.”
On the other hand, the return after the Christmas holidays in Galicia will also imply a novelty: the protocol for the use of mobile phones in educational centers has been delivered to the Autonomous Xunta de Directors. In reality, Galicia already had regulations in force since 2015, although it only affected school periods.
Now, with the implementation of the new protocol, they will not be able to be taken to schools during non-school periods, such as during complementary and extracurricular activities, at recess or during lunch time. The Galician government comments that up to 76% of centers limit telephone use, but it was time to extend it in its entirety.
In both Autonomous Communities exceptions are considered: You may take your cell phone to class when it is strictly necessary, for justified medical reasons. Of course, it must be authorized by the center's management itself.
