Netflix Spain has made the decision to end the practice of using accounts in countries with currencies of lower value than the euro to access its streaming service from other regions.
This measure has a significant impact on users who previously had accounts in countries such as Türkiye, Nigeria, Kenya, Argentina and others, and who used to access their content from Spain.
Previously, a common way to save money on Netflix was to take advantage of price differences between countries. For example, some users could enjoy a Premium monthly subscription for only 6 euros, while the normal price amounts to 17.99 euros per month.
To carry out this strategy, users used a VPN service that allowed them to register an account as if they were located in another country, like Türkiye or Nigeria. However, this practice has come to an end.
What measures has Netflix taken?
Netflix has taken a series of measures to prevent users from taking advantage of price differences between countries.
For example, you have done the following:
- Blocking payment methods: Does not accept payment methods that are not from the country of origin of the account. For example, if your account is from Turkey, but your credit or debit card is from Spain, Netflix will not let you pay with it.
- Geoblocking by IP: It has also implemented IP geoblocking, which means that you will only be able to access your account from the issuing country. If you try to access it from another country, Netflix will give you an error.
- Account closure: Netflix has begun closing accounts used from a country other than the broadcaster for an extended period.
Netflix’s recent policy change has negatively affected many of its users, especially those who took advantage of cheap shared accounts.
From now on, the content can no longer be accessed and you have to pay the plan that corresponds to your country if you want to continue enjoying the movies and series offered by the platform.
Likewise, Netflix Spain has reinforced its security measures to prevent users from being able to circumvent restrictions by using VPN or other methods.
What options do you have left?
If you are one of the users affected by this measure, you have few or no options in your favor. You will have to pay the original price of Netflix in Spain, which ranges from 5.49 euros for the Plan with ads, 12.99 for the Standard Plan or 17.99 for the Premium Plan.
It’s hard to know what the future holds for Netflix. The company may continue to tighten its measures to prevent the use of accounts in countries with cheap currenciesso there is no choice but to comply with these actions of the company.
