Seen the first Apple Watch Ultra as a revolution that has not been experienced in the wearable since the first generation, it is still not clear what the renewal cycle of this range will be. What does seem more than evident is that the current one is the first, but it will not be the last. AND the latest leaks point to an interesting improvement for the future and that will also be shared with other Apple devices.
A strong commitment to microLED
Apple’s bid to go improving more and more the quality of screens of its products is a reality. We have already seen it with miniLED technology in the larger models of the iPad Pro 2021 and iPad Pro 2022. In fact, a year ago it was said that Apple had increased the manufacture of panels of this type with more devices in mind.
The next step is microLED technology and its arrival on the Apple Watch. And it is that at the beginning of the year an ‘Ultra’ with this technology was already predicted for 2024 and now the latest reports increase that margin to 2025, but they show a clear signal that the future of Apple Watch is microLED. Starting with the premium range, which is what the ‘Ultra’ represents.
This information comes from DigiTimes, a well-known Asian outlet with sources very close to Apple’s supply chain. And joining his report to that of other experts such as Jeff Pu, an analyst at Haitong International Securities, it is also extracted that that ‘Ultra’ would come with a bigger screen going from the 1.9 inches of the current model to one of 2.1 inches. And with microLED, of course.
So, there would be a 10.53% size increase on the screen. Something that is not clear to what extent it will be noticeable, given that the size of the case may not vary and may make the bezels less pronounced, which is precisely what has been done with generations of the standard Apple Watch such as Series 4 and Series 7.
