Gathering your team for an online multiplayer game on PlayStation 5 is about to get a lot easier, we’ll tell you why.
Sony has announced an upcoming system update that will allow you to generate shareable links in order to invite friends directly into your multiplayer sessions on PS5, even if they are not already online or in your friends list. The new “join a session” feature, described by Sony’s Sabrina Meditz on the PlayStation Blog, aims to promote more casual and spontaneous multiplayer gaming in the PlayStation ecosystem.
Rather than having to gather friends through game invites and friend requests, you’ll be able to simply send a link through any messaging or social platform. “ If you’ve just met new friends on your favorite social platform, you can send them an invitation to a PS5 session in the same chat and start playing together immediately, without needing to add each other as friends on PS5 “, explains Meditz.

Playing with your friends on PS5 will get even easier
On the recipient side, friends can join you quickly by simply opening the link, no more going through menus and accepting multiple requests. The only requirements are that recipients have the game installed and have an active PlayStation Plus subscription for online multiplayer.
Sony plans to widely integrate this feature into PS5 games, although Meditz notes that a “small percentage” might require updates from developers to ensure everything works.
For Discord users, Sony is going even further by introducing a dynamic widget dedicated to sharing PS5 sessions. The widget will refresh in real time to show the status of the current multiplayer session, preventing players from joining a session that has already ended.
To complement the new “Join a Session” links, Sony is also implementing the ability to easily share PlayStation Network profiles across apps and social platforms. With just a few clicks, you’ll be able to generate a share link for your or someone else’s PSN profile from the PS5, PlayStation app, or PlayStation.com.
