Apple’s 34th annual developer conference, WWDC 2023, begins this June 5 and probably start with a keynote absolutely historic. The company is expected to make the announcement of its augmented reality glasses, supposedly called Reality Pro, along with new operating systems, new software, new products, and some updates.
facing one keynote Laden with news, where there is likely to be a barrage of news, it can be a bit difficult to keep up with every announcement, every rumor, and every leak. This is a summary of everything we can expect for the WWDC 2023.
Mixed Reality Pro Reality Glasses
Apple’s virtual or mixed reality glasses have been in active development for more than five years. In theory it is the next market that they want to get into and that they want to revolutionize. The company has delayed its departure on several occasions, with changes in strategy, direction and even objectives. It is expected that the WWDC 2023 It is the first time we see them, although they will not go on sale immediately. We estimate that they will arrive in 2024.
According to dozens of rumors, the Reality Pro glasses —as it is speculated that they will be called— will have a lightweight and minimalist design that will make them much more comfortable to use. Supposedly, they will not weigh more than 200 grams. They will be made of aluminum, glass and carbon fiber. The design, in theory, will be similar to that of other competing virtual reality glasses.
they will have a package External battery pack that can be kept in your pocket and will be connected to the device via a USB-C cable. The rumored autonomy is two hours, but when using external batteries, others can be connected and increase the time of use.
The glasses will be virtual and augmented reality with two high-resolution 4K microOLED Sony screens with a 120º field of vision. They will have 4,000 pixels per inch and a brightness of 5,000 nits to support HDR content.
The virtual reality glasses will have more than ten cameras that will record the movement of the hands, arms, legs, and facial gestures. In addition, they will be able to make a scan pupil as a biometric security measure. They will also be able to detect the movement of each finger and it will be possible to type on a virtual keyboard.
Close-range LIDAR cameras and sensors—like on the iPhone—will also record the entire environment around the user. That way they can be used with augmented reality applications.
The Reality Pro glasses they will work regardless of an iPhone, Mac or iPad. They will have two M2 processors, one for high performance and the other for efficiency to operate the sensors, above all.
They will work with a new operating system called xrOS, with a graphical interface similar to that of iOS, with which the iPhone works. Apple is reportedly developing standalone apps for the new device, including Safari, Photos, Messages, Apple Music, FaceTime, Maps, and more. All will be optimized for 3D interfaces and will be able to run 2D iPad apps through a 3D experience.
Apple would also be working with developers and publishers of videogames to adapt them to the new virtual/augmented reality glasses. Likewise, they will offer a dedicated experience to watch series and movies through an Apple TV+ app. In addition to working hand in hand with Disney and Dolby.
The 15-inch MacBook Air would arrive at WWDC 2023
Finally, the 15-inch MacBook Air would arrive, maintaining the design of the new MacBook Air M2 and using the same processor that was presented last year. The device would maintain the same features as the 13-inch laptop, but with a larger screen.
There’s no word on an M2 chip speed or performance boost as part of an annual update to the 13-inch MacBook Air or whether announcements will focus solely on the 15-inch version during WWDC 2023.
Mac Studio M2
It is possible that Apple will present an update to Mac Studio, to incorporate M2 Ultra and M2 Max chips. In 2021 the equipment aimed at the professional market was presented and it has been a resounding success, due to its power, size and price.
The Mac Studio would keep the same design, but would be updated with new processors that would, on average, offer 20-30% more power.
iOS 17 / iPadOS 17
It is certain that Apple will present the new versions of each of its operating systems for each of its products during WWDC 2023. The most important, by volume, is iOS 17, which works on iPhones.
iOS 17 will have improvements to the overall user experience following the changes that came with iOS 16. This includes more and better features for the lock screen. They would also add a new feature to turn the device into a connected home display when placed horizontally on a charger or stand.
Additionally, there will be improvements for the Control Center, more functions for the dynamic island, an app to write a diary, improvements in the Health, Wallet, Search and SharePlay apps. Also, the new CarPlay interface is finally coming, with the functionality built into iOS 17.
But the great novelty of the operating system update is the possibility of installing apps without going through the App Store. It will be done to comply with European regulation, and will probably be limited to that continent.
As for iPadOS 17, the variant of the operating system for Apple tablets, it is likely that during the WWDC 2023 keynote, even more differences with iOS 17 will be shown and it will be increasingly aimed at supporting the operation of professional apps, like Final Cut Pro or Logic, which were recently announced for the iPad.
It is also possible that the widgets to customize the lock screen, the Health app, among others, finally arrive on the iPad thanks to iPadOS 17.
xrOS
xrOS will be Apple’s virtual/augmented reality operating system for its Reality Pro and will be shown in detail during WWDC 2023. Like the company’s other devices, it will have its own apps, its own graphical interface and its own App Store .
It will likely have an iOS-like graphical interface with on-screen elements controllable through gestures, gaze, and in conjunction with iPhone, iPad, or Macs. xrOS together with the glasses will be able to extend the screen —virtually— of a Mac, for example.
Among the announcements that will be made for xrOS will be all the app development tools for the new operating system.
watchOS 10
watchOS 10 will arrive with a significant change in its graphical interface and new functions. Widgets for the Apple Watch will arrive and will focus on Looks, which are specific functions to display information in a few seconds.
watchOS will allow these new widgets to be added to any face. It will also be possible to customize the use of the digital crown and the side buttons, in such a way that other functions can be accessed and not only access to installed apps, for example.
Other announcements during WWDC 2023
Other minor announcements will be made during WWDC 2023 such as new versions of tvOS for the Apple TV or improvements to the software of the HomePod. The keynote will likely feature the first cars to support the new CarPlay, Apple Pay-related announcements, and new developer tools.
